Dear Friends,

Today is Mid-Autumn Festival, one of the largest festivals in Mainland China and East Asia, so we take this opportunity to wish you a fruitful and prosperous season. Created thousands of years ago to celebrate the moon and its relationship to the Fall harvest, Mid-Autumn Festival has become a time to reunite with family and friends. This sense of community is core to our work as we pursue our mission of advancing brain science by supporting institutions, individuals, events and advocacy.
Warm regards,

Professor Magdalena Zernicka-Goetz: Studying early embryonic development
Magdalena Zernicka-Goetz, Bren Professor of Biology and Biological Engineering, recently joined the Caltech faculty to study the processes that guide early embryonic development. The team at Caltech interviewed her about her work…and the importance of mentorship.

TEDMED: Why Science Says Listen to Your Gut
August 28, 2019. For centuries, treating neurological conditions meant developing therapies or drugs that directly targeted the brain. Today, scholars like Sarkis Mazmanian argue that research, drugs, and therapy should actually focus on the gut.

Journal Science: How Memories Form and Fade
August 23, 2019. New research done in the laboratory of TCCI-affiliated biology professor Carlos Lois at Caltech uses mouse models to show that strong, stable memories are encoded by "teams" of neurons all firing in synchrony, providing redundancy that enables these memories to persist over time.

Journal Cell Reports: Orchestrating Development in the Fly Embryo
July 23, 2019. New research from TCCI-affiliated faculty member, Professor Angelike Stathopoulos, at Caltech illuminates how proteins act like conductors, giving cues during the earliest stages of development in fruit flies. This work will help us better understand basic biology underlying human development.

Journal Neuron: Settling the Debate on Seratonin’s role in Sleep
June 24, 2019. Caltech scientists have proven that serotonin is necessary for sleep in Zebrafish and mouse models. The work was done in collaboration between David Prober, professor of biology and affiliated faculty member of TCCI at Caltech and Viviana Gradinaru, professor of neuroscience and biological engineering, Heritage Medical Research Institute Investigator and director of the Chen Institute's Center for Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience.
